It’s been a pretty good month for Evan Knight. The 17-year-old from St. John’s won the Athletics North East (ANE) One-mile Road Race Sunday, finishing the course on the Boulevard side of Quidi Vidi Lake in a time of four minute and 45 seconds.

Knight was part of the provincial under-18 soccer team that claimed the title at the Atlantic Showcase in St. John’s earlier in

May, and two weeks ago, was announced as being among the recipients of Premier’s Athletic

Awards which provides provincial athletes with funding to help offset the cost of training.

Knight, who had been second to David Freake in the Nautilus Mundy Pond 5K in late April, was one of the three Pearlgate Track and Field athletes to finish on top of the finishing list of 49 runners in the main race Sunday. Levi Moulton was in second, just three seconds behind, while Eric Knight, Evan’s twin brother, was third in 5:16.

Eric Knight was a Premier’s Athletic Award recipient (as was Moulton) and had also been part of the N.L. U18 soccer team that was triumphant in the Atlantic Showcase. The three Pearlgate teammates were also members of Newfoundland and Labrador’s track and field team at the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg, where the Knights were two-sport competitors — they were also on the provincial male soccer team for the Games.

Chantel Barnes was the first female finisher in Sunday’s ANE Mile in a time of 5:42 (sixth-fastest of all the main-race runners), with Thelma Greene next at 6:14.

There was also school race division for the ANE Mile.

Patrick Hurley, a 15-year-old from Beaconsfield Junior High School in 5:19, the fourth-fastest time overall Sunday. Aaron Reid of St, Paul’s Junior High was second in 5:54.

The top female finisher in the school division was Elizabeth Mckay, a 12-year-old from Vanier Elementary, who posted a time of 6:35, fifth-fastest among the 106 finishers in the school race.
