Engine trouble forces planes down in Happy Valley-goose Bay
Engine trouble forced two planes to divert to Happy Valley-goose Bay airport Wednesday with the urgent call “pan, pan.”
A Delta Airlines flight en route from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Atlanta, Ga., had to divert to Happy Valley-goose Bay due to a No. 1 engine vibration.
A “pan, pan” — the international marine and air transportation signal for an urgent situation — was declared from the Airbus, according to details in a daily regional report from Transport Canada.
There were 13 crew members and 293 passengers onboard the plane.
After the plane landed without incident in Happy Valley-goose Bay, maintenance personnel observed metal in the tailpipe and changed the engine. The faulty engine was sent for examination and failure identification, and the aircraft went back in service, the report said.
Early Wednesday morning, a “pan, pan” was received from an Air Canada Boeing en route from Calgary, Alta., to Frankfurt, Germany, with 11 crew members and 196 passengers onboard.
The flight crew noticed a loss of oil in the No. 1 engine due to O rings damage on the shaft and the carbon seal.
The plane landed safely and, after repairs, was placed back in service.
The daily reports contain preliminary information, but both incidents included a Transport Canada update.
