Save the date: on July 31 our Red Seal chef, Antoine Harding, will prepare a delicious three-course fish dinner for the Fluvarium’s annual Fish Fry Fundraiser. Beagle Paws presents the 12th annual Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Pet Expo at the Mount Pearl Glacier from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The pet-themed booths have something for every animal lover. Admission is $7 and free for children five years and under. All proceeds go to rescue and rehome unwanted beagles in the province.

Ugly Fat Quarter Quilt Challenge The Fabric Merchant’s 1st annual Ugly Fat Quarter Challenge: 11 local quilters were given a fat quarter of fabric and three weeks to slice it, dice it and add to it to create a 50” x 50” quilt. The entire fat quarter had to be evident on the pieced

front of the quilt, but otherwise the quilters could choose their ultimate design. Completed quilts are hung throughout Posie Row & Co. until June 9. People are invited to vote for their favourite. Everyone who votes is entered to win a $50 gift certificat­e. On June 10, the quilt with the most votes will be awarded a $500 gift certificat­e from The Fabric Merchant. Participan­ts are encouraged to donate their quilts to Daffodil Place.

The Newman Sound Men’s Choir featuring Rob Power on percussion

Off the Beaten Track explores musical traditions from all over the world — from South Africa, Central America and right here at home. The world premiere of a brand-new commission by Dan Morphy of the Torq Percussion Quartet and a unique interpreta­tion of Eric Whitacre’s famous “Sleep” arranged for marimbas are just a taste of the rich musical tapestry we have in store. The province’s first ever Vinyl Fair is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion on Blackmarsh Road. A number of vendors will be selling LPS, 45s, CDS, cassettes, books, banners, shirts, posters and all things music-related. There’s lots of free parking and there’s an ATM on site. Admission is just $1, and children under 12 can attend for free.

FOG Spring Plant Sale

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. everyone is welcome to attend this plant sale held outdoors at the Memorial University Botanical Garden in the garden’s nursery, directly opposite the garden’s main gates at 306 Mount Scio Rd. Sales typically consist of a selection of flowering perennials, shrubs, hostas, trees and rhododendr­ons propagated by FOG’S Horticultu­ral Group.

Singing for Success: Avian Research at the Garden

Come learn all about the avian research taking place at the Memorial University Botanical Garden, 306 Mount Scio Rd., with special guest speakers Dr. David Wilson and Katrina Schwedack, followed by a walk through the garden trails to see if you can spot any of the study subjects — dark-eyed juncos and black-capped chickadees. Become a citizen scientist. We need your help. We will show you how to identify the species, recognize the bird’s unique colour band combinatio­n, and record when and where the bird was seen. This event runs from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

NSO welcomes The Tenors
