Q

: I’ve heard cannabis beer is a thing? Is it going to be legal?

A: Cannabis-infused beer is a thing, but it won’t be legal as part of the first wave of approvals for use of cannabis for recreational purposes.

Cannabis beer is part of a larger group of consumable products — that you would eat or drink — commonly referred to as “edibles.”

The federal government is dealing with these products only after the laws and regulations are in place around plants, dried plant material, oils and smoking weed. But cannabis beers are in development, with the expectation they’ll be able to find their way to your local Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corp. outlet down the line.

“The Canadian government has stated that edibles will be legalized within one year following the legalization of dried cannabis and cannabis oils, so the industry is anticipating that by fall 2019 cannabis beer like ours will be on shelves — and we’ll be ready the moment that happens,” said Province Brands CEO Dooma Wendschuh in a statement to The Telegram. Province Brands is a Canadian company, hoping to be a leader in the cannabisinfused drink market.

Other players, including Canopy Growth, are also developing possible new store products. Province Brands says its drinks are alcohol-free, and would have the added benefit of using parts of the cannabis plants that would otherwise become waste in the marijuana grow and industrial hemp businesses.

Production, retail, even basic definitions… Do you have any questions related to the legalization of recreational marijuana? Don’t hesitate to ask Bud (a.k.a. The Telegram editorial staff). We’ll seek out the answers to your questions, offering a new Q&A each week.
