Amateur Radio Field Day
The Marconi Radio Club of Newfoundland will conduct a demonstration of amateur radio and emergency communications in quest for its third consecutive title to the coveted ARRL Field Day (Smallwood) Trophy, awarded to the top scoring class A or B station in Newfoundland and Labrador (VO1/VO2) as published in QST. SUNDAY, JUNE 24 Arts 2:30 p.m. Soul Food
The Bahá’í community of St. John’s hosts this inaugural Soul Food event, the first in a series. This event is at the Landing in Room 3018 at the University Centre. The program will feature live music, audio-visual pieces and readings from faiths and philosophers, authors, leaders and Indigenous cultures from all over the world. The featured performers for this inaugural event are Greg Bruce and Wade Tarling. Bruce, a woodwind player, is the leader of the popular world beat jazz band Ouroboros. Tarling has just released his first solo piano album, “Strength.” The theme for the first Soul Food event will be The Light Within. It will explore the expression of light from religions, cultures and authors, to illuminate our hearts and minds. The program will feature a diverse selection of material — from Hindu, Bahá’í, Christian, Buddhist and Muslim writings to quotes from such figures as Paulo Coelho, Bruce Lee and the Dalai Lama.
Interspersed between these readings will be live music, poetry and visual art. The Soul Food program will last about an hour, followed by a social time. Admission is free. Free parking in an adjacent parking garage. All are welcome.

Wales in the Harbour
Quintessential Vocal Ensemble (QVE) is performing at St George’s Anglican Church in Petty Harbour. Tickets are $25, or $20 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at Holy Heart Theatre box office, from choir members, or at the door. The concert will feature QVE’S competition repertoire that will be performed at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales next month. This is one of the oldest and most prestigious choral festivals in the world. The newly named choirs of QVE – Aquae and Ventus – as well as six-part a cappella group, Afterglow, will compete in four different categories. Representing Canada, they will compete against choirs from South Africa, Singapore, Germany, Poland, the United States, and more. Businesses in Petty Harbour are supporting the choirs at their upcoming send-off concert by offering special discounts to ticket holders from the day of the event up until the end of the month. Come support choral singing in Newfoundland and Labrador of the highest calibre.

NSO welcomes The Tenors
The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra (NSO) is happy to announce that tickets are on sale now for the NSO Exxonmobil Big Ticket, the NSO’S annual fundraiser. The concert will take place on Oct. 11 at Mile One Centre and will feature The Tenors, backed by the NSO. A decade after forming in their native Canada, The Tenors are an international success story. Free Potato Seeds
The Seed Company by E.W. Gaze in St. John’s is offering free trials of exotic heirloom seed potato cultivars. The historic local business has partnered with P.e.i.-based Phytocultures Ltd. to bring in four unique cultivars of potatoes never before grown in the province: Yellow Sun, Red Smile, Kiss-me-a-lot, and Lobster Red. According to Phytocultures Ltd., these varieties are new to Canada, but are actually quite ancient, originating in antiquity and with possibly 1,000 or more years of production and taste selection behind them. While supplies last, customers are encouraged to take a free sample of one of the varieties and grow them to harvest. All the company asks in return is feedback on how well they grow and taste, to help determine whether they will be brought in as a new product to be sold alongside their regular seed potato selection next year.
