Wide Awake Indigenous Cinema Tour

This free event (free tickets available through the box office) at the St. John’s Arts & Culture Centre begins with a conversation with filmmakers Alanis Obomsawin and Marie Clements in the Pinafore Room on the main floor with moderator and local filmmaker Latonia Hartery. Following the conversation, please stay for a special screening of Obomsawin’s film “Our People Will Be Healed” in the main theatre. This is Obomsawin’s 50th film. It reveals how a Cree community in Manitoba has been enriched through the power of education. In addition to teaching academic subjects, the school reconnects students with their ancestral culture. The film adopts an optimistic tone without denying a dark past. It bears witness to the tragedies that have befallen the Plains Cree, such as being confined to reserves, forbidden to practice any cultural ceremonies, including the Sun Dance, and sent off to residential schools. But first and foremost, the film conveys a message of hope: that in an appropriate school environment, one that incorporates their people’s history, language and culture, Indigenous youth can realize their dreams.

Wide Awake Indigenous Cinema Tour

Screening “The Road Forward” at the Arts and Culture Centre followed by a Q & A with filmmaker Marie Clements, moderated by Mary Walsh. A free event (free tickets available at the box office). This musical documentary connects a pivotal moment in Canada’s civil rights history—the beginnings of Indian Nationalism in the 1930s— with the powerful momentum of First Nations activism today. Clements paints an electrifying picture of how a tiny movement, the Native Brotherhood and Native Sisterhood, became a powerful voice for social, political and legal advocacy, eventually effecting profound change at the national level. “The Road Forward” has stunningly shot musical sequences, performed by an ensemble of some of Canada’s

finest vocalists and musicians, and seamlessly connect past and present with soaring vocals, blues, rock, and traditional beats. A rousing tribute to the fighters for First Nations rights, a soul-resounding historical experience, and a visceral call to action.

Free Potato Seeds

The Seed Company by E.W. Gaze in St. John’s is offering free trials of exotic heirloom seed potato cultivars. The historic local business has partnered with P.e.i.-based Phytocultures Ltd. to bring in four unique cultivars of potatoes never before grown in the province: Yellow Sun, Red Smile, Kiss-me-a-lot, and Lobster Red. According to Phytocultures Ltd., these varieties are new to Canada, but are actually quite ancient, originating in antiquity and with possibly 1,000 or more years of production and taste selection behind them. While supplies last, customers are encouraged to take a free sample of one of the varieties and grow them to harvest. All the company asks in return is feedback on how well they grow and taste, to help determine whether they will be brought in as a new product to be sold alongside their regular seed potato selection next year.
