Bonavista mother still looking for answers 17 months after son’s death
Cathy Johnson is a mother desperate for answers regarding her son’s death — now almost a year and a half ago.
“I can’t deal with this anymore,” Cathy told The Packet in a phone interview. “My son has been gone 17 months.”
Lucas Johnson of Bonavista died on Jan. 21, 2017 in Clarenville. He would have turned 23years old a week later on Jan. 29.
“I wish I was there because I would’ve saved him,” said Cathy through tears. “It’s so upsetting.”
She explained that Lucas was in the West Coast Correctional Centre in Stephenville where he completed a drug rehabilitation program. He was clean for about six or seven months.
“He got out and he had nowhere to go. And he ended up at Clarenville at a party,” said Cathy, who is currently in Alberta.
Cathy says this is where
Lucas died. But she wants to know the facts of the situation, including exactly how and why it happened.
She says, after calling the Clarenville RCMP on multiple occasions during the past months, she’s still only being
told the matter is still being investigated.
“There’s nothing being done as far as I’m concerned! He was my son, he was a human being … it’s difficult.”
Cathy says she still has Lucas’ ashes and she won’t bury them until she has some closure, and knows the investigation into his death is closed.
“I’m looking for answers, definitely, because I’m sick of the police right now. That’s 17 months, they had long enough … I just need answers, I can’t deal with this anymore.”
Cathy is frustrated with the idea of being in limbo with the whole investigation surrounding Lucas’ death and while she does respect the job the police do, she doesn’t know where else to turn.
The Packet contacted the Clarenville RCMP about the matter, however, Staff Sgt. Larry Turner said after reviewing the file, the investigation is still ongoing and therefore the police cannot comment any further.
“It’s still under investigation and we’re continuing to look into it,” he said.
