An exhibition of works by Monday’s Company at Memorial University Botanical Garden, 306 Mt. Scio Rd. Monday’s Company have been painting with Diana Dabinett for 25 years. Podium 2018
Podium 2018 runs from June 29 to July 3 in St. John’s. Podium is Choral Canada’s national, biennial choral conference and concert festival.
It is traditionally co-presented by Choral Canada and one of Canada’s provincial choral organizations. The conference and festival provide unique opportunities for professional development through national-international keynote presentations, interest sessions, lecturerecitals, conducting masterclasses, workshops and reading sessions for conductors, choirs, administrators, students and choral enthusiasts. In 2018, choirs perform in 11 major Spotlight and Highlight Concerts. In 2018, The Singing Network and Memorial University are partnering with Choral Canada to co-present Podium on the Edge: Singing from Sea to Sea to Sea. Podium 2018 will immediately follow the International Symposium on Singing and Song II and will be the first time Podium has been held in Newfoundland and Labrador. Canada Day celebrations Everyone is invited to drop by MUN Botanical Garden from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to enjoy Canada Day celebrations. A variety of crafts, stories, games, activities, duck-feeding, nature hikes and prizes will be provided throughout the day. Create a one-of-a-kind Canada Day butterfly, follow the maple leaf trail, go on a Canada Day scavenger hunt and find the hidden butterflies in the flower gardens. Refreshments, including a birthday cake, will be provided. Regular admission fees apply. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Out of Earshot Festival
Out of Earshot’s inaugural festival will be held from August 23 to 25 at various locations in downtown St. John’s. It’s a non-profit, communitybased festival dedicated to showcasing emerging artists. The line-up includes visiting and local bands, artists, writers, workshops and speakers, including: Eastern Owl, Doxx, Doffing, Laps, Ritual Frames, Surveillance, Syngja, Claire Whitehead, Property, Rabies, Frail Hands, Blunt Chunks, Blood Beach, Chris Murdoch, Lo Siento, Yee Grlz, and many more. A detailed schedule will be released in the coming weeks. Backyard composting
The City of St. John’s, in partnership with the MMSB and MUN Botanical Garden, are offering this free backyard composting information session to residents of St. John’s at MUN Botanical Garden (306 Mount Scio Rd.). Workshops are free and no registration is required. St. John’s residents who have attended the one-hour session can purchase bins from the City of St. John’s. A standard compost bin is $50 and a tumbler compost bin (free standing, doesn’t touch the ground) is $75.

Sound Symposium Harbour Symphony
The Harbour Symphony is original music written for the horns of the ships in the St. John’s harbour. This signature fanfare of the Sound Symposium transforms the ships in the harbour into an orchestra on water. Each Harbour Symphony begins with a radio countdown transmitted to the bridge of the ships by the Coast Guard where players stand at the helms of tugboats, trawlers, and ocean-going freighters. At the signal, a giant, floating horn section reverberates off the Southside Hills and through the streets of old St. John’s, echoing the soul of this 500-year-old seaport. Harbour Symphonies happen every day of Sound Symposium at 12:30 p.m. If you’re anywhere near downtown St. John’s, you’ll hear the ships’ music.
