Vehicles, house damaged in St. John’s crash
Three vehicles are extensively damaged following a frightening collision on Forbes Street Sunday night.
According to information provided to The Telegram by officials at the scene, a pickup struck a parked car at a high rate of speed and drove that car about 20 metres into a tree. The pickup then struck another parked car in a driveway and the deck on the front of a nearby home before coming to rest on that home’s front lawn.
Police responded to the scene around 9:30 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, they had to quickly spray foam on the street as gas was leaking from the car and running down the street. A strong smell of gasoline was still in the air as firefighters and police secured the area.
The 27-year-old driver of the pickup was taken into custody by police and taken from the area in the rear of a police cruiser.
Monday’s overnight report from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary indicated he was issued a seven-day driving suspension.
When The Telegram arrived at the crash scene, an RNC forensics identification officer was photographing the area as area residents watched from nearby sidewalks. A city of St. John’s sand truck was also called in to spread absorbent material in an effort to rid the street of the spilled gasoline.
Neither the driver nor the remaining occupants of the pickup were injured and the incident is under investigation.
