Another big weekend for ball hockey in metro area

Teams competed for four provincial championships at Goulds Arena

Crown Cabinets of St. John’s defeated Bonavista Cabots 5-1 in the final game to win the Tier I championship in the provincial ball hockey tournament held Sunday at the Goulds Arena.

It was a big weekend for ball hockey — coming on the heels of the world junior championship held in Mount Pearl last week — as the provincial Tier I and II men’s championships were held, along with the under17 and U15 men’s events. Next weekend, the U13 and U11 tournaments are set for St. John’s.

The Tier I tournament MVP was Justin Pender of Crown, while teammate Zach O’brien was the top forward. Pat O’keefe of the St. John’s Thunder was the top defenceman, and Bonavista’s Tristan Gray was named top goalie.

In the Tier II final, it was the Gander Raiders with a 2-1 win over Grand Falls Drug Store in the final. Gander’s Adam Dawe was the MVP. Michael Cooney of Grand Falls was the top forward, and teammate James Dunn was the top goalie. The tournament’s top defenceman was Neville Godwin of J&K Plumbing.

Sunday night, the Metro Minor Ball Hockey Association’s U17s were scheduled to play Labrador Lightning for the under-17 championship, with the Black Horses from the St. John’s-based metro minor association slated to meet Labrador Impact for the U15 crown.
