He was due to be released from prison in less than two weeks, but Philip Wayne Pynn — convicted in the 2011 shooting death of his friend — is facing more criminal charges.

The 32-year-old from St. John’s has been charged with assault with a weapon and assaulting a peace officer.

Details of the case were not available, but Pynn is scheduled to appear in New Brunswick provincial court in Miramichi on July 25 for what’s listed on the docket as a bail hearing. That’s just six days before Pynn’s statutory release date, when he will have served twothirds of his federal sentence, according to Cathy Burke of the Atlantic regional office of the National Parole Board.

When released, Pynn will be subject to several strict conditions in the community and his sentence would officially expire April 19, 2020, Burke said.

On Feb. 20, 2016, after a lengthy trial at Newfoundland Supreme Court in St. John’s, Pynn was given an 8 1/2-year prison term for shooting Nick Winsor.

With credit given for time already spent in custody, it left about four years on his term.

Pynn was originally charged with second-degree murder after the accidental shooting in a garage behind a house on Portugal Cove Road. The jury found Pynn guilty of manslaughter.

Another 14 months was added to his jail time after he was convicted for his involvement in a 2014 prison riot at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary.

Pynn pleaded guilty to taking part in a riot and assault causing bodily harm. He was one of several inmates who attacked Kenny Green on Feb. 9, 2014, in the prison’s chapel.
