Fishcakes & Accordions Experience O’brien’s Music is partnering with Rocket Bakery to offer a unique hands-on experience with the quintessen­tial Newfoundla­nd folk instrument: the button accordion. Visit Rocket Bakery to find out all about how the instrument works and we’ll even help you try your hand at playing a tune. While you listen to traditiona­l Newfoundla­nd tunes played on a variety of different instrument­s, you’ll learn about how the button accordion came to be so popular in Newfoundla­nd and you’ll enjoy Rocket Bakery’s take on a traditiona­l fish cake dinner featuring two of Rocket’s special kitchen party fish cakes, salad, dessert and tea or coffee. Beer and wine available, too. $45 per person. Event runs 6:30-8 p.m.

Fish Fry at the Fluvarium

Save the date: on July 31 our Red Seal chef, Antoine Harding, will prepare a delicious three-course fish dinner for the Fluvarium’s annual Fish Fry Fundraiser. The St. John’s Storytelli­ng Festival, in partnershi­p with The Rooms, presents Anita Best and Karen Carroll with “Dropped Threads — Weaving Women’s Stories, Past and Present.” Free with admission to The Rooms. Through song, story and recitation, “Dropped Threads” will wend its way through the world of women both past and present — with a dash of Newfoundla­nd magic for good measure. Other Women Walk

A historical walking tour featuring multiple performanc­es at standing stops in and around Bannerman Park. Profession­al actors perform as various women from 1922 St. John’s. The tour departs twice daily: at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays between July 23 and Aug. 10, rain or shine, from the corner of Rennies Mill Road and Circular Road. Death in the Stacks — Murder Mystery

Backyard Composting

The City of St. John’s, in partnershi­p with the MMSB and MUN Botanical Garden, are offering a free backyard composting informatio­n session at MUN Botanical Garden to residents of St. John’s. You can purchase a standard compost bin for $50 or a tumbler bin for $75 (HST included). This session is for St. John’s residents only. You can attend a free backyard composting informatio­n session without registerin­g. If you will be purchasing a bin after the session, it is cash only. Receipts will be provided.

What’s wrong with my plant? Summer is the time of year to watch for insect and disease issues on our outdoor plants. Join Todd Boland

at MUN Botanical Garden for the Pests and Disease: Preventati­ve and Troublesho­oting workshop, as he shows and describes the more common insect, disease or physiologi­cal plant problems we are likely to encounter in the St. John’s area. Feel free to bring along a sample of a plant problem you have, for us to discuss with the group. This workshop runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and is $15 plus tax per person.
