FEELING CRAFTY? CREATIVE AND ARTISTIC PLACES TO VISIT IN NOVA SCOTIA

In Nova Scotia, there is plenty to see and even more to do. It doesn’t matter if you are coming from a landlocked town, or an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, there is someone for anyone to learn. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush before or if you are a master quilter, Nova Scotia can accommodat­e anyone.

QUILTING

In Margaree Valley, just off the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Kingross Quilts and Fine Arts offers plenty of workshops for amateur, intermedia­te and advanced quilters. Run by Anne Morrell Robinson, who has made over 600 quilts over the years, there is no one more experience­d. Book a workshop, private retreat or class with Kingross Quilts and Fine Arts and learn all about quilting.

From Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Karen Henry is a lifelong quilter who is also an experience­d teacher. Even the newest of students can make something incredible under her watchful eyes. with workshops showing how to slow stitch and bobbin, new skills abound. when the basic steps are down, henry teaches her students to create fabric postcards, woven quilts and pictorial quilts.

GLASS WORK

Witness beautiful creations take shape before your very eyes at using the art of glass blowing at Glass Artisans Studio and Gallery. Glass blowing, an art that takes plenty or patience can be watched in Cape Breton.the Glass Artisans Studio and Gallery takes pride in their wonderful studio that other artists flock to in order to perfect their work. Owned by Wendy Smith, both demos and classes are available for visitors.the studio is open for demos every day from June through to October. located at 45054 Cabot Trail, north Shore on Cape Breton Island, visit soon and see some beautiful pieces of art and pick up one or two pieces of your own.

If creating coasters or sun catchers are more your style, visit Junk-de-verre Glass Making Workshops. design your piece and then fuse it on a kiln and pick it up a week later to bring home.at $18 or less, junk-de-verre is the perfect place to make a heartfelt gift or memory. Drop in anytime during store hours at 53 Main Street, Hantsport and make anything you desire.

At Lynette Richards Rose Window Stained Glass, you can take classes over a few weeks and create your own piece of stained glass. with year round workshops at her studio,731 Terence Bay Road, terence Bay, Richards, a lifelong teacher is able to offer her student’s lots of support. Classes range from 6 weeks, to one day for even the busiest student.

BLACKSMITH WORKSHOP

If you ever feel like you’ve been born in the wrong century, this is the place for you. Every Tuesday from July to late September, Sherbrooke Village offers this unique course for any interested parties. Participan­ts emerge with two forged pieces and a huge smile. Located at 42 Main Street, Sherbrooke, it’s perfect to learn a new trade.

CULINARY

Sometimes, learning can be more fun when you can eat the product.at the Trout Point Lodge there is an interactiv­e, hands-on cooking class available to anyone who wants to learn. Topics such as seafood, pastry and dessert are all available for students. In order to get the true, trout Point experience, stay overnight at the lodge and relax, forgetting any worries.
