Quidi Vidi Lake could host more than the Regatta

-

Here I am again, thinking — but what is it this time? No it’s not Muskat Falls or the oil boom or lack of it, but a lake that has become fixated on a 200-year-old event.

Now, before I get hammered by some people as I was once before, when a reader jumped to conclusions and lam blasted me cause he did not understand what i was getting at, first let me say there is nothing wrong with the Regatta. It’s a wonderful event. But it’s only for one day and is severely wind dependent. St. John’s has a wonderful lake and no imagination to use it to its full potential.

It’s my opinion that some other cities in Canada and the United States use their lakes to put off wonderfull activites during the summertime. Has St. John’s city council run out of ideas for such a wonderful lake? Does the Regatta Commitee control what the lake can be used for?

It was a few years ago that St. John’s citizens were told that they were getting week-long events at the lake. Whatever happened to that idea?

Guess it went by the wayside, like a lot of good ideas.

This lake would be a wonderful venue for power boat races of all classes and I am sure the general public would attend in masses. Hobby boats could display their owners’ skills on another day. Waterskiing events could fill several hours on another day. Model planes may be able to use it also, albeit in a controled fashon if insurance could be purchased for the event. Every day there are Seadoos racing on other ponds, and just the other day I saw a father watching his two sons paddle rowing surfboards on a pond near Paradise.

Come on, St. John’s, get with the times. Use this wonderful lake to its full potential.
