N.L. sixth in Canadian girls U16 baseball

A couple of 11-1 losses left Newfoundland and Labrador in sixth place overall at the Canadian girls’ under-16 baseball championship, which wound up over the weekend in Bedford, N.S. The N.L. team had gone 3-0 in an all-atlantic Canadian pool in preliminary play, defeating New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and one of two Nova Scotia entries in the process. However, the Newfoundlanders fell 11-1 to the other Nova Scotia team in a Saturday quarter-final, and by the same score to British Columbia in a Sunday matchup to decide fifth and sixth place. In the latter game, starting pitcher Betthany Brophy was the N.L. player of the game, while Maddi Healy had the lone RBI and had two walks.

In Saturday’s quarter-final, pitcher Andrea Turner earned player-of-the-game honours for the Newfoundland side. Meanwhile, at the Ray Carter Cup national boys under-15 championship in Oshawa, Ont., Newfoundland and Labrador finished with a 1-4 record.

The N.L. team finished up with a 5-3 loss to Alberta on Saturday, with Ryan Hurley delivering two of his team’s six hits in the game. Starting pitcher Mason Norris took the loss, allowing just five hits and a walk over five innings. However, N.L. committed four errors in the game.

It was the second straight 5-3 loss for Newfoundland, which fell by the same score to New Brunswick. In that one, N.B. trailed 3-2 heading into the final inning, where it scored three times, benefitting from a N.L. wild pitch and an error.

Alex French had two hits and scored twice for Newfoundland. Starter Tomas Hancock (6K) and reliever Liam Bavis, who took the loss, limited New Brunswick to five hits, but it still wasn’t enough to secure a victory.
