N.L. musicians mourn woman who fell from cliff

- ST. JOHN’S

A Chicago woman who loved Newfoundland music has been identified as the victim of a fatal fall from a cliff at Cape Spear National Historic Park.

Kim Hix ended up in the water early Saturday in what appears to be an accident.

A number of people had gathered at North America’s most easterly point to watch the sunrise.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it took about 3 1/2 hours for police, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department and other first responders to recover the 53-year-old woman’s body.

Hix was an avid fan of Newfoundland performers, including Great Big Sea and The Once.

Bob Hallett, a businessman and former member of Great Big Sea, paid tribute to Hix on Twitter.

“The accident at Cape Spear Saturday caused us to lose a special person and a great friend of the music of Newfoundland,” he wrote.

“Kim Hix had a huge personality and heart, and truly loved this place and the music that animates it. The cast and crew of Great Big Sea will never forget her.”

Said Hallett’s former bandmate, musician and author Alan Doyle: “We’ve lost a massive fan and promoter of Newfoundland music and indeed Newfoundland itself. Much love to all family and friends during this heartbreaking time. RIP Kim. Singing a song for you tonight.
