Entertainment 6:30 p.m. Fishcakes & Accordions Experience
O’brien’s Music is partnering with Rocket Bakery to offer a unique hands-on experience with the quintessential Newfoundland folk instrument: the button accordion. Visit Rocket Bakery to find out all about how the instrument works and we’ll even help you try your hand at playing a tune. While you listen to traditional Newfoundland tunes played on a variety of different instruments, you’ll learn about how the button accordion came to be so popular in Newfoundland and you’ll enjoy Rocket Bakery’s take on a traditional fish cake dinner featuring two of Rocket’s special kitchen party fish cakes, salad, dessert and tea or coffee. Beer and wine available, too. $45 per person. Event runs 6:30-8 p.m.

NL Book Awards Killick Capital Fiction Reading
The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador invites you to readings and a panel discussion, with Q&A to follow. Hosted by CBC’S Angela Antle. Classes Ongoing Acting classes
The Performing Arts Group has opened registrations for fall film/ theatre/audition technique acting classes with actor, songwriter and musician Sean Panting. Panting has worked extensively as a stage, film and voice actor. Beginner and intermediate adult classes are Wednesdays from 8-10 p.m., experienced adult classes are Mondays from 8-10 p.m., and intermediate and experienced youth (ages 16-19) classes are Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. Space is limited. VOWR Guest Interview
Barbara De Land speaks with Chris Rusted, founder and owner of the Manna European Bakery and Deli, located on Freshwater Road for the last 30 years. Under Chris, Manna Bakery became a well-known St. John’s institution after he decided his business would follow the European style of baked goods and desserts under the direction of a St. John’s woman, originally from Prague, who had begun offering these sorts of items not long before. The direction of the business is now being passed on to Chris’s son, Jonathan.

Coastal Sounds Community Choir Making plans for fall activities? Coastal Sounds Community Choir invites anyone who loves to sing

The Rooms Tour: A History of Fort Townshend
The site that The Rooms stands on has been occupied since 1778, when the British built Fort Townshend to secure St. John’s harbour against their enemies. Learn about the military history of this site and find out how The Rooms came to be built here. This tour takes 20 minutes and is weather permitting every Friday.

The Memetic Self-portrait Project
Memetic: meme + etic. Of or pertaining to memes; images or sayings that carry cultural symbols or social ideas. Originally from California, but based in St. John’s for the last 15 years, David Baltzer has created large-format paintings that interrogate our understanding of identity, gender, race and self in the turbulent 21st century. The reception for “The Memetic Self-portrait Project” is Aug. 31 from 6-8 p.m. at the Neal Building, 4th floor, 50 Harbour Dr. The show opens Aug. 29, and runs Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Sept. 15.
