MUN names alumni award winners
Antle, Cahill, Downer and Callahan to receive Alumni Tribute Awards
Paul Antle, Fred Cahill, Bethany Downer, and Sharon Callahan have been named winners of the 2018 Alumni Tribute Awards.
The awards are granted to those “Who have achieved distinction in their chosen fields, are committed to their alma mater, and have made outstanding contributions to their communities.”
Antle, who was recently named the Liberal candidate in Windsor Lake byelection, has been named the 2018 Alumnus of the Year. Antle started the SCC Environmental Group in his mother’s basement in 1988, since going on to form a business empire centred on the St. John’s dockyard. Antle has previously served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Roundtable on Environment and the Economy and was among Canada’s representatives at the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.
Fred Cahill has been awarded the J.D. Eaton Award for outstanding volunteer contributions to Memorial University. Cahill is president of the Cahill group, one of the largest construction companies in Atlantic Canada.
Cahill is chair of the board for the Genesis Centre, a member of the MUN board of regents and an honorary board member of the Affinity NL Calgary event.
Bethany Downer is winner of the Horizon Award, which recognizes achievement by a Memorial graduate under 25 years of age.
Downer has completed a master of science in space studies from the International Space University and has attended astronaut training with Project POSSUM in Florida. She could be the first Newfoundlander and Labradorian in space.
Sharon Callahan has won the 2018 Community Service Award.
A social worker for 35 years, Callahan was named Canada’s 19th chief commissioner of the Girl Guides of Canada, later being named international commissioner.
She is president of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, chair of the Seniors and Pensioners Coalition, and past-president of the N.L. Public Service Pensioners Association.
The awards will be handed out on Oct. 11 at Memorial University’s Signal Hill campus.
