NL Book Awards Killick Capital Fiction Reading

The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador invites you to readings and a panel discussion, with Q&A to follow. Hosted by CBC’S Angela Antle. Free, accessible event in the Foran Greene Room at St. John’s City Hall from 7-9 p.m. All welcome. Award finalists are Bridget Canning for “The Greatest Hits of Wanda Jaynes” (Breakwater Books), Joel Thomas Hynes for “We’ll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night” (Harpercoll­ins Publishers Ltd.) and Mary Walsh for “Crying for the Moon: A Novel” (Harpercoll­ins Publishers Ltd.). Join us for free, weekly, all-levels outdoor yoga on the lawn of Government House, 50 Military Road, in St. John’s all summer long on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. (45 mins). Weather permitting. Meet at the greenhouse. Bring your yoga mat. Classes are intended for adults.

Join Fishing for Success at Rocket Bakery from 5-8 p.m. for a familyfrie­ndly evening of hands-on activities that are all about fish and fishing. Learn ancient skills of weaving rope and knitting net — but with a modern twist all your own. Make your very own souvenir to keep. Learn skills that have been handed down through Newfoundla­nd and Labrador families for generation­s.

7:30 p.m. Aikido

Aikido is an effective martial art with an ethical approach: use the aggressor’s energy against them without harming them. Get fit and focused while having fun. Aikido is offered by the Fudoshin School of Aikido at St. Theresa School, 100 Mundy Pond Rd. It’s a welcoming place for everyone. Ongoing Acting classes

The Performing Arts Group has opened registrati­ons for fall film/ theatre/audition technique acting classes with actor, songwriter and musician Sean Panting. Panting has worked extensivel­y as a stage, film and voice actor. Beginner and intermedia­te adult classes are Wednesdays from 8-10 p.m., experience­d adult classes are Mondays from 8-10 p.m., and intermedia­te and experience­d youth (ages 16-19) classes are Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. Space is limited. Barbara De Land speaks with Chris Rusted, founder and owner of the Manna European Bakery and Deli, located on Freshwater Road for the last 30 years. Under Chris, Manna Bakery became a well-known St. John’s institutio­n after he decided his business would follow the European style of baked goods and desserts under the direction of a St. John’s woman, originally from Prague, who had begun offering these sorts of items not long before. The direction of the business is now being passed on to Chris’s son, Jonathan.

Hosted by Rogers TV’S Don-e Coady. In an adjacent room, there will be balloon twisting and arts and crafts for children.
