Macneil-lamswood, Cormier win Tour Championsh­ip

In its 13th season, the Tely Junior Golf Tour, in partnershi­p with The Telegram, hosted 12 events across the island portion of the province that concluded with the Tour Championsh­ip held on the Twin Rivers Course at Terra Nova Resort & Golf Community Monday.

This year, 65 junior golfers ranging in ages 11 to 18 competed in the tour which was created to provide rules education and a competitiv­e pathway program for junior players wishing to develop their skills in a competitiv­e setting.

The final competitio­n of the season concluded with the presentati­on of the Order Of Merit for each division and individual­s awards for personal achievemen­ts during the year. In the boys junior division, Ryan Macneil-lamswood of Harmon Seaside Links captured the junior championsh­ip with a win in the final competitio­n to claim the title with a point total of 250 points. In the junior girls division, Taylor Cormier from Blomidon Golf Club captured her third consecutiv­e title, winning all of her events, on her way to top spot in the Order of Merit with 250 points.

In the juvenile boys division, Ethan Efford of Bally Haly Country Club amassed the maximum points of 250 to capture the Ayre Trophy as the top juvenile for 2018 and winning his second consecutiv­e championsh­ip. In the bantam boys division, Evan Snow of Gander Golf Club captured the Watson Trophy as the top bantam with a total of 250 points. Paige Allen of Blomidon Golf Club won her second consecutiv­e bantam division crown, winning the Thompson Trophy as the top bantam with a total of 250 points in the Order Of Merit.

The Hutchinson Cup which is awarded to a female player not beyond her third year and showing improvemen­t through the season was awarded to Sanjana Gullipalli of Clovelly.

The Telegram Trophy for the most improved male was awarded to Nathan Young of Clovelly. Nathan competed in six of the 12 events on the tour throughout 2018 and showed continued improvemen­t throughout the season as well as last year’s competitio­n.

The Charles and Una Cooke Trophy, awarded to the most improved female showing improvemen­t over the season, competing in a number of events and having improved from previous years was awarded to Katie Colbourne of Blomidon Golf Club. The Charles Earle Trophy, also known as “The West Coast Swing”, is presented to the player that competes in all three events on the west coast, their respective scores and the strength of the fiield. This year’s West Coast Swing Award was presented to Jack Pelley-machardy for winning all three events in the juvenile division on the west coast this past season.

Golf NL also took the opportunit­y to thank Telegram Distributi­on Manager Rob Squires, the staff and management of The Telegram for their continued support and sponsorshi­p of the Tely Junior Tour, as well as the many volunteers, officials and Golf NL member courses for hosting events in 2018.

A special thank you was extended to Bruce Watson for his continuous support and assistance in the operation of another successful Tely Junior Tour.
