The Memetic Self-portrait Project

Memetic: meme + etic. Of or pertaining to memes; images or sayings that carry cultural symbols or social ideas. Originally from California, but based in St. John’s for the last 15 years, David Baltzer has created large-format paintings that interrogat­e our understand­ing of identity, gender, race and self in the turbulent 21st century. The show runs Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Sept. 15 at the Neal Building, 50 Harbour Dr., 4th floor.

Choir Upcoming Chordially Yours

Chordially Yours — a 50-plus local community choir with a repertoire spanning all music genres — is seeking male voices and female alto voices to join their choir. Looking for a fun group of friends to hang out with? Join 508 Caribou Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The site that The Rooms stands on has been occupied since 1778 when the British built Fort Townshend to secure St. John’s harbour against their enemies. Learn about the military history of this site and find out how The Rooms came to be built here. This tour takes 20 minutes and is weather permitting every Friday.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 Activities

A selection of proven perennials, heaths, heathers, shrubs and trees are being offered in the annual Fall Plant Sale organized by Friends of MUN Botanical Garden. This rain or shine outdoor event is held in the area directly opposite the main gates of MUN Botanical Garden, Mount Scio Road from 10 a.m. until noon. Experience­d gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and help identify plants suitable for your garden. Quantities are limited for some plant varieties so come early for best selection! Look for volunteer greeters wearing orange safety vests and our directiona­l and parking signs.

Fundraiser

The Multiple Myeloma March increases awareness and raises funds for clinical research and supports advocacy for accelerate­d access to new therapies for Canadians living with myeloma. St. John’s is one of 23 communitie­s across the country that will participat­e in the Multiple Myeloma March. The financial goal this year for St. John’s is $10,000.
