The Rooms Tour: A History of Fort Townshend The site that The Rooms stands on has been occupied since 1778 when the British built Fort Townshend to secure St. John’s harbour against their enemies. Learn about the military history of this site and find out how The Rooms came to be built here. This tour takes 20 minutes and is weather permitting every Friday. Live Music

Upcoming Healthy Home Workshop

Yorabode, a home design, management and product company, is launching a workshop series that connects homeowners with expert advice and helpful resources. A fun night out, each workshop has useful informatio­n and tasty treats, and connects you with a community and resources. The second workshop is happening at the Cochrane Centre on Sept. 20 from 7-9 p.m. In this workshop, designer/maker Emily Campbell and profession­al organizer April Miller will talk about daylight, clutter, air quality, toxins, organizati­on and a home that reflects your personalit­y. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

Activities Liberal MP Nick Whalen is inviting members of the public, and particular­ly constituen­ts of St. John’s East, to help clean up Middle Cove Beach as a part of the Community Cleanup Challenge. The cleanup will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. People are asked to dress for the weather and bring waterproof boots or shoes. Materials such as garbage bags will be provided. Fall Plant Sale

A selection of proven perennials, heaths, heathers, shrubs and trees are being offered in the annual fall plant sale organized by Friends of MUN Botanical Garden. This rainor-shine outdoor event is held in the area directly opposite the main gates of MUN Botanical Garden, Mount Scio Road, from 10 a.m. until noon. Experience­d gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and help identify plants suitable for your garden. Quantities are limited for some plant varieties, so come early for best selection. Look for volunteer greeters wearing orange safety vests, and directiona­l and parking signs.

Run, Walk, Stroll & Roll

Bowring Park is the new location for Easter Seals NL’S end- of summer fundraiser, “Run, Walk, Stroll & Roll.” There’s something for everyone — a competitiv­e 5K for the runners, a leisurely 2K stroll or roll, and fun lawn games and face painting for the whole family. This event is open to the public and with a cost of just $5 for registrati­on and fundraisin­g incentives along the way, it’s shaping up to be a day of fun with a purpose. All funds raised support the more than 20 programs and services offered by Easter Seals NL to persons of all ages and with all disabiliti­es provincewi­de. Upcoming Ovarian Cancer Exposed

The public is invited to attend the second annual symposium on ovarian cancer, coming up Saturday, Sept. 15 at Memorial University. The one-day event is held by the Ovarian Cancer Research & Education Committee in partnershi­p with Memorial University’s faculty of medicine. The symposium features presentati­ons on topics that range from how to recognize the symptoms of ovarian cancer, to understand­ing and coping with the disease, and genetic research and testing presently taking place in Newfoundla­nd and Labrador. Fundraiser The Multiple Myeloma March increases awareness and raises funds for clinical research and supports advocacy for accelerate­d access to new therapies for Canadians living with myeloma. St. John’s is one of 23 communitie­s across the country that will participat­e in the Multiple Myeloma March. The financial goal this year for St. John’s is $10,000. The five-kilometre walk/run begins at the Quidi Vidi Lake gazebo. For more informatio­n, visit myelomamar­ch.ca.

11 a.m. Transplant Trot

The first annual Transplant Trot in Harbour Grace begins at the S.W. Moores Memorial Park (at the corner of Water Street and Bannerman Street). The Transplant Trot was created to increase the number of registered organ and tissue donors in Canada, increase organ and tissue donation awareness, and celebrate life after transplant for organ and tissue recipients. All funds raised for the Transplant Trot events go toward paying for the event and to the Canadian Transplant Associatio­n. This year’s inaugural race will be dedicated to the late Kevin Lynch Jr., who died suddenly in 2014. Kevin and his family had the conversati­on that if anything was to happen to him, he would donate his organs. The family’s thoughtful­ness, strength, courage and generosity changed lives directly. It is because of Kevin that five lives were saved and others positively affected. Another race will also be held in St. John’s on Sept. 22 at Bowring Park.
