7:30 p.m. Monthly Storytelling Circle Join the St. John’s Storytelling Festival for their monthly storytelling circle hosted by Gary Green from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at The Crow’s Nest Officers’ Club (off Duckworth Street on the east side of the War Memorial). Admission is $5, cash only. It’s already starting to feel like the season where you want to cuddle up with a good book — or a fine bunch of storytellers. Host Gary Green is a historical whiz with a humorous wit. You’re sure to delight in his captivating tales founded on fascinating pieces of local history and myth, and often packing a fine pun. We’re also seeking excited participants for the open mike. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned teller, we welcome you to share your tales. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 Art
Memetic: meme + etic. Of or pertaining to memes — images or sayings that carry cultural symbols or social ideas. Originally from California, but based in St. John’s for the last 15 years, David Baltzer has created large-format paintings that interrogate our understanding of identity, gender, race and self in the turbulent 21st century. The show runs Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Sept. 15 at the Neal Building, 50 Harbour Dr., 4th floor.

Health Upcoming Ovarian Cancer Exposed
The public is invited to attend the second annual symposium on ovarian cancer on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Memorial University. The one-day event is held by the Ovarian Cancer Research & Education Committee in partnership with Memorial University’s faculty of medicine. The symposium features presentations on topics that range from how to recognize the symptoms of ovarian cancer, to understanding and coping with the disease, and genetic research and testing presently taking place in Newfoundland and Labrador. The site that The Rooms stands on has been occupied since 1778, when the British built Fort Townshend to secure St. John’s harbour against their enemies. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 Art 3 p.m. Opening reception
An opening reception will be held from 3-5 p.m. at The Leyton Gallery of Fine Art, 6 Clift’s-baird’s Cove, for Malin Enström’s “berg” and Anita Singh’s “Habitats.” Both exhibitions will run until Oct. 7. To English speakers, “berg” is a nickname for those huge chunks of ice that drift past Newfoundland and Labrador every spring. In its original Nordic context, berg means mountain and bedrock, lending the connotation of massive scale borrowed by ice mountains or icebergs. In this work, Enström explores ideas of scale in the natural world, the cumulative magnitude of innumerable bits of disintegration of humongous mountains of ice and rock. Singh’s “Habitats” is an exhibition of recent artworks that are inspired by her interest in the natural world on a microscopic scale. The work incorporates printmaking, encaustic painting and a ceramic installation with a video component.
