Victim and accused were coworkers for an Annapolis County moving company

The mother of the man accused of murdering another man in a New Glasgow hotel says her son made a mistake.

Jason David Bezanson of Annapolis County has been charged with second degree murder following an alleged incident at the Travel Lodge in New Glasgow Friday at 2:40 a.m. and appeared in Pictou Provincial Court Monday.

Bezanson will return to court on Sept. 24 to set dates for a preliminary inquiry. A bail hearing will be held in Supreme Court at a later date.

“My son’s not guilty,” said Bonnie Ward, Bezanson’s mother. “He made a mistake and he feels bad.”

Ward said her son and the victim were both employees for a moving company and were travelling together along with others to help move school equipment.

“Nobody can apologize more than my son,” Ward said. “It’s beating him up.”

Bezanson’s wife Taffney Caldwell also believes it was an accident.

“They were friends,” she said. Caldwell spoke with reporters outside the courtroom in Pictou Monday. She and Bezanson have been married for 18 years and have children together.

Police initially charged Bezanson with aggravated assault, but when the victim died, they added the charge of second degree murder. The crown withdrew the charge of aggravated assault on Monday.
