Activities 10 a.m. Constable Sam Jeffers’ Memorial Ride

Newfound Riders present the 15th annual Constable Sam Jeffers’ Memorial Ride, starting at the Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial at the Confederat­ion Building’s east parking lot at 10 a.m. The motorcycle ride will travel with police escort to Monty’s North Atlantic gas station in Whitbourne before heading to Carbonear. Registrati­on fee is $10 per rider. Proceeds help pay for and maintain the monument at the Confederat­ion Building and the bronze plaque in Carbonear. This ride was postponed last Saturday because of adverse weather conditions.

2 p.m. Kent Cottage Open House

Join us for a tour of Kent Cottage at Landfall, Battery Road in Brigus from 2-4 p.m. The tour includes the cottage grounds, as well as a chance to learn about its artistic residencie­s and the work of visiting artists. This event is part of Culture Days.

Tour Signal Hill Campus

Memorial University’s new Signal Hill Campus will be open to the public Saturday from 2-5 p.m. People are invited to explore the new facility, take in exhibits and enjoy ice cream. The free, all-ages event will include a geology and fossil display by the Johnson Geo Centre, demonstrat­ions by Genesis clients and activities from Let’s Talk Science. At 2 p.m. there will be a tribute to Paul J. Johnson, who was an entreprene­ur and philanthro­pist,

and an art unveiling at 3 p.m. Parking is available on site as well as at the Johnson Geo Centre and the Parks Canada Signal Hill Visitor Centre.

Arts Northeast – Hello Fall

An art exhibition and sale of original works will be held at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 411 Stavanger Dr., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free admission. No tax. Everyone is welcome. Artists Brenda Rowe, Michelle Whitten Lacour, Dora Cooper, Pat Hayden Ryan and Joan Roberts will be present. Visa and Mastercard accepted.

Fundraiser 7:30 a.m. VOWR Radiothon

VOWR will hold its annual Radiothon on Saturday, Sept. 29 and on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. each day. VOWR volunteers will be on the air requesting financial pledges, with the proceeds going toward VOWR’S operationa­l expenses. This is VOWR’S major annual fundraiser and all donations will be gratefully accepted. Pledges can be made by calling 579-9233. Donations can also be mailed to VOWR at P.O. Box 26006, St. John’s, NL, A1E 0A5, or made via Paypal on the VOWR website, vowr.org. If you are in the area of the station on Patrick Street on either Saturday, you can leave your donation in the drop box or come into the station.

The George Street Associatio­n (GSA) hosts this Back to School Street Party on George Street (19+) featuring DJS Halftraxx, Jbillz, and Van Greene. As part of this event, the GSA will give away five prizes of $1,000, and there will be 10 draws for 20 tickets for the 2018 George Street Mardi Gras. Symposium 9 a.m. Muskrat MUN

The public is welcome to attend a discussion of the problems associated with the Muskrat Falls hydroelect­ric dam, which are changing the social, cultural and environmen­tal life in the province. At this symposium, questions that you won’t hear at the public inquiry will be addressed, such as: how can a $13-billion investment in energy security result in energy being more expensive, and less accessible? A wide range of speakers from here and abroad will share what they know and join in a discussion about the controvers­ial aspects of the project. The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Memorial University’s Engineerin­g Building, Room 2006. Free parking is available in Lot 27.
