Toronto production company to put off eight-run performance at Holy Heart Theatre
From left, former Appleton mayor Derm Flynn, St. John’s actress Petrina Bromley, actress Kate Etienne — a native of Corner Brook — and actor George Masswohl in downtown St. John’s Monday for the announcement that the hit musical “Come From Away” will be staged for eight performances at the Holy Heart Theatre in January 2019 by the play’s Toronto cast. Masswohl portrays Flynn in the play.
“Come From Away” is coming home.
Thanks to a short gap between the Toronto production’s move from the Royal Alexandra Theatre to the Elgin Theatre in January, the production team is bringing the Tony Award-winning show to St. John’s for an eight-performance run at the Holy Heart Theatre from Jan. 23-27.
These will be the first performances of the show in the province since two by the original cast in Gander before the show even made it to Broadway.
“We canvassed the cast and band to find out if they would be willing to travel and perform in what otherwise would have been a holiday week for them,” Toronto producer David Mirvish stated in a news release.
“Before we could finish our request, all of them were jumping for joy at the opportunity to visit Newfoundland. Having played in Toronto for over eight months to standing-room-only crowds, they all cherished the chance to tell the story on ‘native soil.’”
St. John’s actress Petrina Bromley, who was been with the original main cast since Show 1, will be performing on Broadway in New York in January.
However, Corner Brook native and actress Kate Etienne will be onstage at the Holy Heart Theatre.
Net proceeds from the eightrun engagement will go toward the six towns that harboured displace travellers in the area — Gander, Gambo, Appleton, Lewisporte, Norris Arm and Glenwood — as well as the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Community Food Sharing Association.
Tickets, ranging in price from $29 to $99, not including applicable taxes, go on sale today exclusively through holyhearttheatre.com. Show dates and times are: Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
