Special thanks to Newfoundland

In early September I had the true pleasure of visiting St. John’s briefly on business for the first time. What a wonderful city you have.

While there, I took in some fantastic sights and had some great conversations with very friendly local residents, and enjoyed the famed Duke of Duckworth fish and chips. I also had the opportunity to buy a few items, one of notable value. As I headed to the airport I accidentally left one of my bags in Bad Bones Ramen noodle house on Water Street as I had ordered some, what turned out to be very tasty, “to go” ramen. However, I did not realize my error until the next day.

Once I had finally tracked down the store where I left it they graciously agreed to drop it off at my hotel and the hotel then couriered it to me. I was delighted to eventually receive my bag. I fully expected someone, somewhere, along the way to have removed the item that was clearly marked as expensive. It could have easily been pawned off, or quickly sold, for good money. Much to my surprise and delight everything was in the bag.

Needless to say, the actions of the Bad Bones Ramen staff, the staff at ALT Hotel (not to mention the other store owners I called, who I could tell actually checked with their staff and around their store and not just brushed me off) have restored some of my faith in humanity.

I thanked the individuals involved, of course, but, I felt that was clearly not enough and hoped you would print this letter in your Letters to the Editor section, so that at least some public recognition and goodwill is extended their way for their honest and forthright actions in helping me recover my lost items.

They could have easily just said: “sorry, no bag here, or no expensive item left in it” even though they must have easily discerned the value of the contents. That speaks volumes about the character of Newfoundlanders.

Thank you to all Newfoundlanders. I now plan to come back again some day on vacation, and will certainly share my story of what wonderful people Newfoundlanders are.

Of course, you already know that.
