St. John’s family physician Dr. Norah Duggan is one of 10 physicians across the country being honoured by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

The awards are for the 2018 family physicians of the year and will be presented Nov. 16 in Toronto at a gala.

“We are pleased to honour these dedicated family physicians whose hard work, earnest efforts and unfaltering delivery of patient-centred care enrich the lives of their patients, families and the communities they serve,” college president Guillaume Charbonneau said in a news release.

Duggan, a graduate of Memorial University’s medical school, began her career in Twillingate and moved to St. John’s in 2003.

She currently works at one of MUN’S teaching sites in Shea Heights, a multidisciplinary clinic with patients from newborn to palliative.

She also conducts house calls and performs small procedures.

The clinic includes public and community health nurses, a social worker and a pharmacist. Duggan is also clerkship director for rural family medicine at MUN.

She is also involved in research in youth mental health, low-risk obstetrics and undergraduate education, the national college said.

“Dr. Duggan finds being able to care and advocate for patients, and share their joys and sorrows, both a joy and honour. … She is passionate about promoting the value of family medicine, undergraduate education and, above all else, her family,” the college said in its biography of Duggan.
