Big win on Lotto Max

- BY COLIN FARRELL

Bram Whittle of Grand Bank was a man of few words as he received a giant cheque for $1 million from officials with the Atlantic Lottery Corp. during a presentation held at Braxton Suites in Marystown Wednesday.

Whittle had misplaced the ticket, and it wasn’t until Oct. 14 that he checked to see if he was one of the two Maxmillion winners in the province.

“(It was) in the young feller’s car, under the seat,” he explained. “I thought I had it lost.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Burfitt’s Electro-tech in Grand Bank and the store received a one per cent seller’s prize.

Whittle, who works as an excavator operator at mining operations in St. Lawrence owned by Canada Fluorspar Inc., said he doesn’t plan to quit his job.

He expects, however, to take some time off to take his family on a Disney vacation.

The father of two also said he has other plans of what to do with the winnings.

“I’m going to buy a new house, and I bought a new truck, was the first thing I done,” he told The Southern Gazette Wednesday following the cheque presentation.

Financial security

While fighting back tears, Colleen Cumben, Whittle’s fiancée, said the win means much more than material things — it means a sense of security.

“Not worrying if I’ve got to pick (to pay) the light bill or (buy) groceries, that’s the most important thing to me,” she said while being overcome with emotion.

“Not cars, not the vacation, but knowing that my kids will be taken care of, and I don’t have to worry anymore.”
