Major upgrades on the way for Quidi Vidi Lake
City and partners contributing $2.7M towards park redevelopment project
The grounds around Quidi Vidi Lake are getting a $2.7 million upgrade.
The Quidi Vidi Park Redevelopment Project will include upgrades to the parking area near the boathouse, replacement of the existing wharf structure near the bandstand, and enhanced accessibility along the north bank adjacent to the Boulevard.
The upgrades are expected to enhance the area for Royal St. John’s Regatta participants and spectators, as well as the other events that occur around the lake throughout the year.
The City of St. John’s is on the hook for the lion’s share of the funding, contributing $1.26 million towards the upgrades.
The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, is chipping in $950,000. The provincial government’s Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation has committed $500,000 through its regional development program.
Boathouse area upgrades
• Parking relocated to the back of the boathouse to improve public safety. Will create an additional 23 spaces.
• New storm sewer system to alleviate runoff problem on Clancey Drive and wharf area
• Redevelopment of area to include seating, landscape, wharf railing
• Wharf resurfaced with new coloured concrete and brick pavers
• Permanent award presentation area incorporating historical regatta features
Wharf replacement at Marquee
• New wharf constructed using marine grade timber decking and cribbing
• Built into the shoreline and angled toward regatta start/ finish line to allow boat docking in safe, efficient manner • Allows for additional trail connections and seating
North Bank
• Re-grading the slope to make it safer and more accessible while also providing a level terrace with more usable space for assembly purposes
