Adult Art History Lecture Series

Do you love art, but find yourself wondering what makes a masterpiec­e a masterpiec­e? Who are the artists who created these great works of art and what inspired them? This series of lectures will look at artists from the romantic period to the modernists, their most famous works, and what made these masterpiec­es important in their own time and why they continue to be influentia­l and important today. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8 Activities Ongoing Armistice 100

Armistice 100 opens Thursday at The Annex, Admiralty House Communicat­ions Museum. Through guided tours and public programmin­g for all ages, Armistice 100 commemorat­es the end of the First World War by extending the narrative to understand what happened once the fighting stopped. This exhibit will be on display for the month of November. This year marks the 100th anniversar­y of the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War. This commemorat­ive exhibit will feature stories of the Newfoundla­nd Royal Naval Reserve and the HMS Briton following the war, paintings by local Mount Pearl artist Darlene Redmond, and an array of First World War artifacts — including items that were brought home from battlefiel­ds in Europe.

Story time takes place at the Torbay Pubic Library every Thursday morning until Nov. 15 for preschool children and babies, accompanie­d by an adult. Drop-ins welcome. No fee. Public Lectures 7:30 p.m. Architectu­re Lecture Series

The Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Associatio­n of Architects (NLAA) is hosting its annual Public Architectu­re Lecture Series with its second lecture at the Quidi Vidi Plantation. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. with an informal meet and greet and then the lecture begins at 8 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public – everyone is welcome. This lecture will feature Stephan Chevalier and Sergio Morales of Chevalier Morales Architecte­s from Montreal, Que.

Dr. George H. Story Lecture

A professor of history and Celtic studies at the University of Toronto delivers this year’s George Story lecture at Memorial University. David A. Wilson will speak on the topic of State Security and Civil Liberty: The Fenians and the Secret Police. In October 1865, the Fenians — Irish revolution­aries in the United States, dedicated to the independen­ce of Ireland and the destructio­n of the British Empire — drew up plans to invade Canada. With deep historical reach, Wilson’s lecture will answer questions with significan­t contempora­ry resonance. The Dr. George H. Story Lecture in Humanities takes place in the Suncor Energy Hall in the school of music. A reception will follow. Free parking is available in lot 15B.

Looking to add some love to your family? Petsmart Charities of Canada’s National Adoption Weekend is hosting its last nationwide adoption event of 2018 beginning Friday and continuing until Sunday, Nov. 11 (Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) at Petsmart locations across Canada – including Petsmart at 5 Stavanger Dr. For nearly 20 years, Petsmart Charities of Canada has partnered with animal welfare organizati­ons across the country to bring adoptable pets into Petsmart stores to give them a helping hand at finding a forever home. Dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, small pets and more will be looking for families across Canada (call your local store to confirm which pets will be on site).
