Ongoing Armistice 100
Armistice 100 opens Thursday at The Annex, Admiralty House Communications Museum. Through guided tours and public programming for all ages, Armistice 100 commemorates the end of the First World War by extending the narrative to understand what happened once the fighting stopped. This exhibit will be on display for the month of November. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War. This commemorative exhibit will feature stories of the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve and the HMS Briton following the war, paintings by local Mount Pearl artist Darlene Redmond, and an array of First World War artifacts — including items that were brought home from battlefields in Europe.
Upcoming Drawing workshop
The Botanical Art Society of Newfoundland and Labrador has just two spaces remaining for a mid-november four-day workshop, titled “Botanical Drawing and Composition” with Ottawa-based instructor and artist Kerri Weller. The dates for this workshop are Nov. 15-18, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, at the MUN Botanical Garden Conference Room. Check www.botanicalartsocietynl.com for details or to register.

The next general meeting for members of the National Association of Federal Retirees – Avalon/burin Branch will take place Nov. 14 from 2-4 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion on Blackmarsh Road. Guest speaker for this meeting will be National Association CEO Simon

The Council of Canadians – St. John’s Chapter’s will hold its annual general meeting, followed by a talk and discussion with climatologist Dr. John Jacobs about the province’s energy strategy and the 1.5-C climate threshold. 7:30 p.m. Architecture Lecture Series
The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Architects (NLAA) is hosting its annual Public Architecture Lecture Series with its second lecture at the Quidi Vidi Plantation. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. with an informal meet and greet and then the lecture begins at 8 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public – everyone is welcome. This lecture will feature Stephan Chevalier and Sergio Morales of Chevalier Morales Architectes from Montreal, Que.
Dr. George H. Story Lecture
A professor of history and Celtic studies at the University of Toronto delivers this year’s George Story lecture at Memorial University. David A. Wilson will speak on the topic of State Security and Civil Liberty: The Fenians and the Secret Police. In October 1865, the Fenians — Irish revolutionaries in the United States, dedicated to the independence of Ireland and the destruction of the British Empire — drew up plans to invade Canada. With deep historical reach, Wilson’s lecture will answer questions with significant contemporary resonance. The Dr. George H. Story Lecture in Humanities takes place in the Suncor Energy Hall in the school of music. A reception will follow. Free parking is available in Lot 15B.

Petsmart Charities of Canada’s National Adoption Weekend is hosting its last nationwide adoption event of 2018 beginning Friday and continuing until Sunday, Nov. 11 (Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) at Petsmart locations across Canada – including Petsmart at 5 Stavanger Dr. For nearly 20 years, Petsmart Charities of Canada has partnered with animal welfare organizations across the country to bring adoptable pets into Petsmart stores to give them a helping hand at finding a forever home.
