National Adoption Weekend
Looking to add some love to your family? Petsmart Charities of Canada’s National Adoption Weekend is hosting its last nationwide adoption event of 2018 beginning Friday and continuing until Sunday, Nov. 11 (Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) at Petsmart locations across Canada – including Petsmart at 5 Stavanger Dr. For nearly 20 years, Petsmart Charities of Canada has partnered with animal welfare organizations across the country to bring adoptable pets into Petsmart stores to give them a helping hand at finding a forever home. Dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, small pets and more will be looking for families across Canada (call your local store to confirm which pets will be on site).

Spirit of Newfoundland takes you to the beginning of 1914 with the king’s call to duty. “Where Once They Stood” is a dramatic, musical and comedic showcase that moves you through Newfoundland’s involvement in the First World War and tells our story through historic facts enhanced with music from the era, from haunting ballads to songs that will make you stand up and cheer. Dance 9 a.m. National Auditions
Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS) is daring dancers across the country to make their dreams come true by auditioning for NBS’ annual National Audition Tour. The tour will visit St. John’s with open classes on Nov. 10 and auditions on Nov. 11 at the Arts and Culture Centre. Auditions for the school’s full-time Professional Ballet Program (students in grades 6 –12) and Post-secondary Program (high school graduates) are specially designed ballet classes where dancers are assessed for quality of movement, coordination and overall suitability for the demands of classical ballet. The minimum age to audition is 10, and no prior ballet training is required for students aged 12 and under. Junior and senior dance students are also welcome to participate in NBS open classes, which are designed for students to attend regardless of their intent to audition for the full-time program. Adam Baxter Album Release Party
Released as a surprise treat for attendees of Musicnl Week and Live at Heart Newfoundland in October, “Open and Shut” comes just four months after Adam Baxter’s recent fulllength, full-band release, “Domestic.” Adam is excited to offer his listeners an intimate collection of stripped down acoustic songs to capture the solo live show he has given all over Atlantic Canada. The Royal Canadian Legion Newfoundland and Labrador Remembrance Day parade and ceremony will begin at the Sergeants’ Memorial, Queen’s Road at 10:10 a.m. The parade will arrive at the National War Memorial at approximately 10:45 a.m.

For the Fallen
Cantus Vocum Chamber Choir (Chad Stride, Artistic Director) presents our annual concert, For the Fallen. Joined by the wonderful Young Men’s Ensemble of Atlantic Boychoir (Jakub and Jennifer Martinec, Artistic Directors) and the rousing Salvation Army Citadel Band (Don Langdon, Bandmaster), you will be treated to a wide range of gorgeous music paying tribute to all who have served and celebrating our precious lives and freedom. For the Fallen takes place at the Salvation Army Citadel (25 Adams Ave.). Admission is $20 ($15 for seniors and students) and tickets are available now from choir members, or at the door.
Going Down of the Sun
Instead of regular morning services, St. James United Church (330 Elizabeth Ave.) will hold a Going Down of the Sun service to commemorate Remembrance Day, with music by our church’s band, Sight Restored. We invite you to join us in remembering our veterans, soldiers and others who suffered or sacrificed their lives during war.
Sunset Bells of Peace
The Royal Canadian Legion is holding a special event at sunset called ‘Bells of Peace’. The event begins with a short ceremony at 3:45 p.m. at the National War Memorial in St. John’s and concludes with the ringing of one hundred bells at sunset.
