C.B.S. working to reduce speeds
C.B.S. will increase its budget for 2019 aiming to slow traffic down through the community. The Town of Conception Bay South announced Wednesday it will increase funding from $25,000 annually to $90,000 to appease council’s concerns With the increased funds, the Town will be able to enhance its traffic calming measures, which may include additional signage, pavement markings, flashing radar signs and speed humps.
C.B.S. will continue its road safety initiatives, such as regular radar patrol in areas known for higher driving speeds, mobile digital traffic signs displayed throughout the community to bring awareness to drivers’ speeds, targeted traffic operations in partnership with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), and more public safety education campaigns. “We want to make sure everyone – our motorists, pedestrians and cyclists – feels safe on our roads. You can’t put a price on safety,” Mayor Terry French said in a news release.
“We are a growing town, one that is focused on becoming a community of choice for families wanting to establish longterm roots. To do this, we must strive to build the safest community possible,” he added. As a proactive safety measure, the Town also collects data on various streets, such as volume of traffic and average driving speed recorded. If residents would like to learn more about their street, they can visit www. conceptionbaysouth.ca/roadsafety.
“We completed traffic calming initiatives in the areas of Chamberlains, Topsail and Kelligrews. We installed new sidewalks in school zones. We also proudly welcomed the RNC to our Town as they opened their new detachment just a few weeks ago, and are pleased to invest in their building and continue growing our strong partnership,” French said.
“We want our residents to know that we hear what they are saying; we understand that high vehicle speeds are a concern and we are taking action. Hopefully, by putting more resources into traffic calming, we will get people to slow down,” he added.
