OPP arrives in Corner Brook to look into RNC shooting
Investigators from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are in Corner Brook to conduct an investigation into the police shooting death of Jorden Mckay.
Mckay, 27, died in the early hours of Wednesday morning, not long after being shot at his apartment by a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer.
As has been the case with previous police shootings in Newfoundland and Labrador, the OPP has been asked to come in and investigate as an outside agency.
Sgt. Carolle Dionne, a media relations officer with the OPP, confirmed that investigators from the OPP’S Criminal Investigation Branch left Ontario for Corner Brook Wednesday.
She said it was too early to say how long the investigation would take, but the OPP members would look to speak with anyone who was involved or might have information pertinent to what happened.
The RNC said it was responding to a criminal complaint when two officers went to Mckay’s residence on Carriage Lane at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The police said there was a confrontation that resulted in an officer shooting Mckay.
Mckay’s family and the police say he was pronounced dead at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook about an hour after the police went to his home.
The Western Star has learned that the police went to Mckay’s home to arrest him on charges that had been filed at provincial court in Corner Brook one day earlier.
