Threat made against Danny Williams Building

Corner Brook law courts evacuated after police receive concerning message

- BY GARY KEAN

Court staff, lawyers and anyone else having any business at the courthouse in Corner Brook were breathing a sigh of relief an hour after a threat briefly shut the building down Friday morning.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it received a threat to the Danny Williams Building at 9:15 a.m.

By 9:30 a.m., anyone inside the building had been evacuated, with the exception of some sheriff’s officers, who helped police scour the building for any sign of the alleged threat.

The RNC would not specify what kind of threat had been made, but references to it being a bomb threat were being tossed around by those mingling outside the building.

Sgt. Brad Saint, one of the officers who was inside the building for the sweep, told The Western Star the search of the building was for something specifically mentioned in the threatening message received by the police.

He wouldn’t confirm the nature of the threat, saying it was a matter being investigated.

The building was cleared of any threat by 10:30 a.m. after it was further checked with the use of the RNC’S police dog, Garvey, and handler Const. Scott Mosher.

Nothing of a threatening nature was found during the search, Saint confirmed.

The court remained closed for the morning and court business resumed at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The matter remains under investigation.
