Everyone can help reduce greenhouse gases
In this age of uncertainty about climatic change and pollution, it is difficult to know what we, as individuals, can do to repair these overwhelming, environmental problems.
As a walker/bike rider, I often come across stationary cars/trucks in parking lots, street curbs, etc., with engines idling while their drivers usually appear to be involved with cell phones, eating lunch, etc.
One time, I observed a parked car idling for 20 minutes on my walking round. I have also seen many municipal and government vehicles guilty of this practise, even though certain city councillors say vehicle idling is against municipal policy.
This type of unnecessary idling may seem insignificant individually, but when considered globally, it adds a considerable amount of greenhouse gas to our environment. Today’s modern cars waste gasoline and produce unnecessary greenhouse gases if left idling for more than 30 seconds. In other words, it is better to turn the car/truck off after 30 seconds idling, and restart it when needed.
I think every driver should make the effort to reduce greenhouse gases by turning off their vehicle engine while parked for extended periods.
This will also have the additional benefit of cleaner air to breathe and an overall savings in fuel for the individual. After all, it only takes being mindful of the problem and a flick of the wrist to turn off your engine. Easy! Blair Withycombe Mount Pearl
