RUNNING GREAT WEEKEND FOR ST. JOHN’S RUNNER/ HOCKEY MOM NEWHOOK
Chances are St. John’s athlete Paula Newhook was pretty thankful on this past Thanksgiving Day weekend.
The personal trainer from the capital city enjoyed some personal success, while at the same time her ell-known, hockey-playing kids thrive in weekend activities.
Paula ran the Bank of America Chicago Marathon Sunday, finishing in 3:45.30 in the 45-49 age division. She was No. 2,984 overall amongst females, and No. 11,389 overall. Pretty good when you consider the number of runners who crossed the Chicago finish line was 45,786.
Meanwhile, in upstate New York, her son, Alex, a freshman with the Boston College NCAA hockey team, helped the Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season with a 3-0 win over Colgate University.
Alex was drafted in the first round, 16th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche last June.
And in New Brunswick, Paula and Shawn Newhook’s daughter, Abby, helped the Newfoundland and Labrador under-18 women’s hockey team finish second in the 2019 Atlantic Challenge Cup hockey championship.
Newfoundland lost 7-2 to New Brunswick in the goldmedal game. Abby Newhook had a goal and an assist in that one. She led her team in scoring in the tournament, with five goals and an assist in five games.
She currently attends Tabor Academy prep school, south of Boston, and like her brother, Alex, has committed to attending Boston College.
