Last season, Junior Cadougan made a bit of a habit of winning the National Basketball League of Canada’s award as Canadian player of the week.

Perhaps, he’s picked up the habit again.

On Tuesday, the St. John’s Edge point guard was named the NBLC’S latest top domestic player, this after scoring 20 points, dishing out eight assists and adding six rebounds in a 109-105 win over the Halifax Hurricanes Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre.

It was a fifth straight victory for St. John’s (5-5), although the team saw the winning streak end the following night in a 101-97 loss to the Hurricanes.

Cadougan was a three-time winner of Canadian of the week honours last season.

Averaging 15.3 points per game, the 29-year-old from Toronto is second in scoring on the Edge (Karrington Ward leads at 16.2). He tops the teams in assists (5.2 per contest), while averaging just over four rebounds each outing.

Moncton Magic forward Billy White is the league’s overall player of the week after averaging 24.7 ppg and 7.3 rebounds in three games, all Moncton victories, last week,

The defending champion Magic will be the Edge’s next opponent, travelling to St. John’s for games Feb. 4 and 5. ———

Those games against the Hurricanes were the first for St. John’s in 18 days, a hiatus that had been extended because of the State of Emergency imposed after the blizzard that hit the St. John’s area earlier this month.

In advance of the games against Halifax (which had changed from a Friday-sunday to a Sunday-monday series), the Edge offered bowl-seating tickets for $8 to fans who donated a non-perishable food item at the time of purchase, and the promotion turned out to be a huge success.

The team, which averaged more than 3,000 fans for the games, collected 2,500 food items — or two truckloads worth — for the Community Food Sharing Association, a donation that was made on Tuesday.
