MCGRATH Paul Jude
1969 - 2020
Sadly and unbelievably, we announce the passing of Paul, our dear son, brother, father and friend---consumed by a devastating illness that took over his body, but never affected his trademark spirit. He takes with him the hearts of his loving family, Parents, Leo and Lorraine, St. John’s; sister, Jennifer, St. John’s; brother Ian, Halifax; daughter Emily, stepdaughter Ariana and their mother Anna in Ontario. He will be sadly missed by his aunts and uncles Helen Mitchell, Janet Crane, Lynn Norberg, Gloria & Wade Greeley, Karen Jardine, Bernice Jardine, and Don & Colleen Jardine, as well as a large number of cousins and other relatives and friends in Newfoundland and Ontario. Affectionately known as “Tugs” to his friends, Paul left St. John’s after graduating from Gonzaga High School to attend Niagara College and begin a career in the hospitality industry. He thrived in his adoptive home, while proudly proclaiming his Newfoundland background. Genuine, compassionate and warm-hearted, his “salt of the earth” nature was personified by the pure enjoyment he reaped from time spent with family and friends, and accentuated by his hearty, infectious, distinctive laughter. Very much involved in sports growing up, he continued to participate in softball, basketball, and hockey rec leagues around Niagara and was always a popular member of a golf foursome. His laid-back approach to the game delighted in the beauty of the course and camaraderie of his playing partners, instead of the results, often choosing to not even keep score. And as all who knew him would attest, he was an avid fan of the Royal St. John’s Regatta and always planned his trips home around the first Wednesday in August. Paul was a stalwart in his hospitality career, defying the common belief that a boss should not, or cannot be a friend with his staff. He was respected and loved by those he led during his tenures at Jack Astor’s, Mcmaster University, St. Catharines G & C Club and, for the past 8 years, The Niagara Health System. The relationships and memories he made in those environments were very meaningful to him. The family extends boundless gratitude to Cheryl Coens. Her tireless and selflessness as his caregiver during this time has been the ultimate example of unconditional friendship, as she assisted in any and every way to provide as much help to Paul as possible. Her support will never be forgotten. Additionally, thank you to the outstanding staff at Aramark Healthcare, Niagara Health System, and St. Catharines Hospice for your care and many kindnesses. Cremation has taken place, and the family will announce a “Celebration of Paul’s Life” in the future.
