Patients, residents to start moving into new long-term care home
CORNER BROOK — Western Health will move patients and residents into the new long-term care home in Corner Brook throughout June.
Western Health CEO Cindy Davis said the health authority has made significant efforts to protect residents, patients and staff as it opens the new home, given the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a news release issued Monday, Davis said precautions are in place to reduce the potential spread of the coronavirus in long-term care facilities throughout the region, including screening and testing residents prior to their moving in, daily screening and isolating residents who require separation from others.
The palliative care and rehabilitative care units will open this week, while restorative care will open later in the month. People who are awaiting long-term care at Western Memorial Regional Hospital will also move into the new home later this month.
These groups have been prioritized to move first to enable capacity at Western Memorial Regional Hospital and the Corner Brook Long-term Care Home for a potential surge of COVID-19 patients. Planning for more residents to move into the home is ongoing and the transition will continue gradually.
The new home has 105 long-term care beds, 15 restorative care beds, 15 palliative care beds and 10 rehabilitative care beds. Construction of the approximately $120-million home, located at 110 Health Care Cres., was completed in February.
