GETTING CLOSER TO THE ROCKY SHORE

- Wilfred Bartlett Placentia

Recently, the premier was questioned about the letter that was sent to him by more than 50 business people who help keep this province alive; people who know how to keep their businesses afloat.

They want him to try and get this province opened up so that our sick and dying can get the hospital services that they need; also, to get our economy back on course before it’s too late.

His answer was his plan is working, people need to be healthy, his plan is working because the people of Newfoundland and Labrador know what to do, and we have been through all this before. There are a lot more diseases far worse than COVID19 and these people need to be healthy, too. What about them, Premier?

A few months ago, before COVID-19, our credit was cut off — no more loans. We had to go to Ottawa on bended knee to get money to keep the public service working.

Although we are in the worst financial crisis we have ever seen, this Liberal government keeps spending money like it’s growing on trees.

Ten million for the forestry on Friday for planting trees and cutting down others doesn’t make much sense. If we don’t plant one tree or do any thinning for the next 10 years, our forests will still be healthy.

Fire trucks being bought. Money for home repairs and new homes.

We have always survived through good times and bad times by being prudent — not buying a new vehicle, building on an extra room, cutting back on extras that we can do without. We wait until times get better.

We all agree this government inherited a mess. Cathy Bennett, as finance minister, saw the problem and set out to reverse the mess, not Premier Dwight Ball. He put Tom Osborne in the engine room and with him in the wheelhouse we have been at full speed ever since — in reverse. After 5½ years, Ball is still blaming all our woes — as he did last week in the House — on the previous government.

In other words, he is incapable of fixing the problem. He is not entirely to blame, because his full caucus is backing him all the way or else they would speak up. I say to them, what is more important, your job or our province?

To all the 40 politicians: this has been going on far too long. Please read this letter carefully and think about what I am saying, and most of all, think about what you are doing to our children’s future.

We are leaving port with empty fuel tanks.

As seafarers, we have seen many times when we were in danger of crashing on the rocks, and this time I fear the rocks are getting closer. As most people in this province know, it’s a terrifying sight. The sad part of this is, we are all aboard this ship. Remember the Titanic.
