Recreational facilities reopen in Corner Brook

-

CORNER BROOK — The City of Corner Brook started reopening select recreational spaces on Thursday, including Jubilee Field, the dog park, the skate park, tennis courts, beach volleyball courts and basketball courts.

Playground equipment, which had been off limits during the COVID-19 pandemic, was also reopened at Margaret Bowater Park and Bartlett’s Point. Both facilities will undergo regular sanitizing, but users have to adhere to physical distancing rules and bring their own hand sanitizer.

The city issued a news release on the reopenings, and said an announcement about the opening of other playground facilities will be made at a later date.

With the heatwave the city has been experiencing this week, one welcome spot opening on Friday will surely be the splash pad at Margaret Bowater Park.

Opening of the park’s outdoor pool will be delayed while staff members undergo special training for COVID19 protocols.

The Wellington Street soccer complex is open to user groups for drills, but not games. Spectators will not be allowed.

The Atlantic and Eastside soccer fields will be open to public use for unstructured practice. The Daddy Dawe Field in Curling will remain closed for the season.

The Fred Basha Memorial Softball Pitch on Wellington Street and the Eastside Pitch will be open to the public. Users are advised to bring hand-sanitizer and adhere to physical distancing rules. The Atlantic softball pitch will remain closed for the season.

User groups are required to undertake specific social distancing and hygiene measures in order to safely engage in their activities. Those guidelines were developed in consultation with user groups and advice from provincial authorities.

Members of the public who want to use any of the open facilities must contact the specific user groups involved for permission and guidance.

A number of outdoor fitness classes have also been approved to begin.

Namaste Yoga Studio will hold classes on the Majestic

Lawn from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, beginning July 7.

Megan Humphrey Yoga will hold classes at Bartlett’s Point on Sundays from 7-8 p.m. on June 28, July 5 and 19 and Aug. 2 and 23. Classes will also be held on Thursdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in August.

The YMCA will hold Zumba classes in Margaret Bowater Park on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7-8 p.m.

The city says residents and stay-cationing visitors are welcome to use its outdoor green spaces and trail networks. When interacting with high-touch areas in any of these fields or spaces, residents and visitors are encouraged to bring their own hand sanitizer.

June is recreation month and the city is encouraging residents to share photos of themselves being active to be entered into a prize draw. People can tag the city’s social media pages with the hashtag #Recmonthcb or email their submissions to rwight@cornerbrook.com.
