PRIDE IN PETTY HARBOUR

- BARB SWEET/THE TELEGRAM

As pride week kicks off (July 10-19 in St. John's), Fishing for Success in Petty Harbour was already out ahead with a rainbow dory launched in the harbour. The donated dory was painted by Liam Duggan and Meghan Young of Fishing for Success, a non-profit group that connects young people to the community by sharing the heritage of traditional fishing. It was donated by Thrive and the Wooden Boat Museum, and some of the young boat-builders through Thrive and the Mcmorran and Buckmaster's Circle community centres had participated in a summer cod fishery program. The dory not only celebrates Pride, but also features the trans colours in the seating area, as well as black and brown colours on the stern and gunnels to reflect diversity. The dory is named “Paul and John” to honour the late Paul Hearn, who was from Petty Harbour, and his late partner, John Campbell. On Saturday, Museum Day in the province, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., people can get their photo taken with the dory (on land) for $5 (using their own camera or phone). The admission price includes a paper dory model kit.
