Alberta Mountie beaten with own baton

COLD LAKE, Alta. — A Cold Lake RCMP member is recovering at home after being attacked with their own baton while attempting to make an arrest at a shopping centre parking lot on Tuesday.

In a Wednesday news release, police said the officer was allegedly attacked by a 44-yearold man in a Walmart parking lot after the member suspected the man of stealing a vehicle. Police said the officer took numerous blows to the head including several from the member’s own baton after the suspect took it.

The man then attempted to steal one vehicle by smashing its window but wasn’t successful and later stole a Chevrolet Trailblaze­r SUV after threatenin­g the driver with a knife and the baton, police said.

The man then fled southbound on Highway 28. Following a pursuit by RCMP where the Trailblaze­r became disabled, the man was arrested without further incident. Police said the baton was recovered in the vehicle.

The Mountie who was attacked was treated at hospital for non-life-threatenin­g but serious injuries and is recovering at home. RCMP is not providing any identifiab­le details about the member.

The suspect is currently in custody awaiting charges.
