Cabinet minister won’t run again
Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Carol Anne Haley will not be seeking reelection in the next provincial election.
Haley, the MHA for Buringrand Bank, issued a statement on Friday saying she’s decided to strike more of a balance in her personal and professional life.
“Over the course of the
COVID-19 pandemic, and being able to spend more time with my family, I realized just how consuming political life had become,” wrote Haley, in a release.
“This global crisis has given us all time for pause and, in my case, I have reached the conclusion that a more balanced family life is required. Therefore, I have made a decision that I will not seek re-election in the next general election.”
Haley says she informed Premier Dwight Ball of her decision more than a month ago and informed Premierdesignate Andrew Furey around the same time.
Haley was first elected in 2015 and was re-elected in the 2019 general election. In November 2018, she was named the province’s first standalone minister for the status of women. There is no guarantee the portfolio will remain a stand-alone department. Sources indicate all cabinet portfolios are under review as part of Furey’s transition into power.
In a release, Furey thanked Haley for her service to the province.
“MHA Haley has invested her time and energy into her roles as Minister for the Status of Women and Chief Government Whip, and I commend her for doing so,” wrote Furey.
“I am sure the people of Burin-grand Bank are glad to see MHA Haley will continue to represent them in the House of Assembly, and I am happy to have her support.”
Furey and his cabinet will be sworn in as the 14th premier of Newfoundland and Labrador on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
