POWER Helen Mary

-

July 18, 1940 – April 15, 2021 It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of Helen Mary Power (nee Maher) of St. John’s, Newfoundland, in her 80th year. Leaving to mourn her devoted husband of fifty-five years, Frank; children Colleen (John) Lindquist, Frank (Penny) Power Jr., and Judy (Cory) Goodyear; grandchildren Julia, Kristin, Daniel, Benjamin, Jesse, Sarah, Alyssa and Joshua; sister Pat Maher, brothers Tom (Joan) Maher, Bob (Carol) Maher, Dave (Clarice, deceased) Maher, and Paul (Sharon) Maher; sisters-inlaw Robin Vermeeren, Pam (Fred, deceased) Arsenault, Agg Maher, brother-in-law Mike Simon; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of cherished friends. Predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and William Maher; sisters Peg (Dolf) Auchinleck and Maureen Simon; and brothers Kevin Maher and Bill Maher. Helen will always be remembered for her kind ways, compassionate heart, wonderful sense of humor, and resilient spirit. Her adoring grandchildren were the light of her life. She loved each of them dearly, and loved spending time with them, having countless tea parties, and building gingerbread houses at Christmas. She could often be found in her kitchen baking up a storm (her homemade bread was world-famous), while belting out show tunes, or singing along to ABBA records in beautiful soprano. Her love of music and singing was lifelong, singing in choir as a schoolgirl and continuing right up to her 80th year. She was a member of The St. John’s Choir for 28 years, and sang with Avalonia for 17 years, which she enjoyed immensely. Throughout her life, she worked as a Hair Stylist, then worked tirelessly in the family business for many years, and even owned and operated a campground on Salmonier Line. She loved animals, and saved many a stray cat. She simply adored children, and they loved her. She had a Mother’s heart, through and through. We will always remember Helen especially for her unending optimism, even in the face of trials, and how she selflessly put others before herself again and again. Cremation has taken place. Visitation to take place from Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 Lemarchant Road on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 from 4pm-8pm. COVID-19 Restrictions apply.
