Both April showers and flurries this week

The jet stream is often dubbed a highway that controls the movement of our weather, but the weather is not always travelling at highway speeds and sometimes comes to a halt.

There is a strong ridge of high-pressure southeast of Greenland and a building ridge to our west. Between the two ridges, is a trough that will have varying influences on our weather.

It won’t be all bad news for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and P.E.I. with a mix of sun and cloud in the forecast this week. However, clouds will dominate at times with chances for showers over the next couple of days and the potential for some wet flurries mixing in, especially in eastern N.S. and P.E.I. on Wednesday night.

The western ridge of this high is then forecast to settle the weather for Thursday and Friday.

It’s a bit of a different story for Newfoundland and Labrador where lingering rain showers from a departing trough are followed by another jet stream dip bringing unsettled weather for central and eastern of Newfoundland.

A third low will then stall and retrograde on Thursday, bringing rain and flurries or wet snow back to the Island before clearing later Friday.

Rainfall totals over the next couple of days in eastern Newfoundland will range from 20 to 50 mm and some light slushy accumulations can’t be ruled out over higher elevations. Strong northwest winds also accompany this weather.

The upper-level ridge of high pressure will pass over and east of us this weekend with another trough behind it. Another round of rain is expected to cross the Maritime provinces Friday night through Saturday and Saturday night through Sunday for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Rainfall is not looking significant at this time with moderate wind gusts forecast.

The weekend ends with a ridge of high-pressure stretching into the start of next week.

I know many of us are looking for more extended stretches of fair weather, but it’s April, and we’ll take the sunshine when we can.
