Police divers search rec canal
One westbound lane and the only sidewalk over the Ontario Road Bridge were closed to traffic for about four hours Sunday as part of an ongoing Niagara Regional Police investigation in Welland.
Two police divers dispatched from St. Catharines were lowered from a boat into the recreational waterway shortly before 1 p.m. and left about two hours later, apparently without finding what they were looking for.
“Negative results to report,” said acting Staff Sgt. Simon Gichard at 33 Division in Welland.
He would not say whether the divers were looking for a body, a vehicle or something thrown from the middle of the bridge on the north side of the roadway.
