Emily Lutz, a candidate for Kings County, recently provided responses to a Q&A SaltWire is providing to municipal election candidates.

Q. What’s your full name?

A. Emily Lutz

Q. What position are you running for?

A. Councillor for District 7, Kings County

Q. Where are you from?

A. I am from Rockland, Kings County.

Q. What did you do before you decided to run for office?

A. I grew up on (and am still part of) my family’s apple farm. I have also held several positions in marketing and sales, completed the Nova Scotia Municipal Internship Program in Cumberland County, and recently graduated from Acadia with a Master’s in social and political thought with a focus on municipal planning. I am also a mom to three wonderful young children.

Q. Why have you chosen to run in this election campaign?

A. I am running because I am passionate about rural life and love being involved in my community. It is so important to care for the people, institutions, and traditions that make us who we are, and I think council can play a big role in enhancing our communities.

Q. What strengths would you bring to council if you are elected?

A. I treat my position on council as a full-time job and give it 100 per cent of my professional time and energy. I have deep connections in my community from growing up here, but also by the volunteering and community work I do on the board of Grand View Manor, UNESCO Landscape of Grand Pre, Berwick Nursery School, and others. As vice-president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities, I represent Kings at the provincial level and I’m a leader among my colleagues, twice being elected deputy mayor.

Q. What do you see as the biggest strength/asset of the community/ region and what measures would you take to capitalize on them?

A. I think Kings’ biggest strength is the perfect balance between beautiful natural landscape and small-town feel. With our fundy beaches, mountain lakes, and rolling farmland just moments away from our “number one highway” urban core with great shopping and walkable downtowns, you can enjoy the best of both worlds in Kings.
